The history of this Rolex Submariner Date
The Rolex Submariner Date is descended from the 1953 Submariner, the first wristwatch water-resistant to 100 metres, which appeared at a time when scuba diving was gaining popularity. The company added the date function to the Submariner in 1969, with a date window at 3 o’clock topped by a magnifying lens. Rolesor, a combination of steel and 18-carat gold that Rolex has been using since the early 1930s and for which it registered the name in 1933, subsequently gave this diving model its two-tone version. This Submariner Date, reference 126613LN, belongs to the generation launched in 2020, which features a 41 mm case, redesigned slimmer lugs and is powered by the calibre 3235. It retains the features designed for diving, including round, baton and triangular hour markers that are easy to distinguish underwater, and a 60-minute graduated bezel for tracking dive time.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Submariner Date
The 41 mm Oyster case in Oystersteel is fitted with a unidirectional rotating bezel in 18-carat yellow gold, fitted with a black Cerachrom ceramic disc whose numerals and graduations are gold-plated. The screw-down crown in 18-carat yellow gold is protected by a shoulder on the middle, and the solid screw-down case back is satin-finished. Beneath the sapphire crystal, the Cyclops lens magnifies the date at 3 o’clock. The glossy black dial features luminescent hour-markers outlined in gold and Mercedes-style hands in 18-carat yellow gold. The watch is water-resistant to 300 metres. The Rolex Manufacture calibre 3235, a self-winding movement, offers a power reserve of approximately 70 hours and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, featuring a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring. It is certified as a Superlative Chronometer, regulated to between -2 and +2 seconds per day once the watch is finished. The Oyster bracelet, with three rows of solid links, features brushed steel on the sides and yellow gold in the centre, and fastens with an Oysterlock safety clasp with a folding clasp.
Why this Rolex watch
The yellow Rolesor Submariner Date retains the legibility and construction of a professional diving watch, whilst the gold on the bezel, crown and central links makes it just as suitable with a shirt as with a weekend outfit. At authorised retailers, this model is rarely available without a waiting list. This particular watch offers immediate access to a Submariner from the current generation, in a condition close to that when it left the shop and with several years’ manufacturer’s warranty. For those torn between stainless steel alone and solid gold, the Rolesor version features gold on the visible elements whilst retaining the robustness of Oystersteel for the case.
