The history of this Rolex Submariner
With the reference 16610, Rolex presents a technical evolution of its diving watch. Designed for professional divers, it has established itself as a benchmark in utilitarian watchmaking. Produced in the 1990s, this specific iteration illustrates the transition from older models to modern technical design. A distinctive historical feature characterises this period. The lacquered dials introduced by the manufacturer reacted to temperature changes over time. The lacquer would shrink, forming a network of fine cracks. Collectors refer to this phenomenon as a ‘Spider dial’. This patina gives each watch a unique visual signature.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Submariner
The 40 mm Oyster case is machined from stainless steel. Its polished sides contrast with the brushed finish on the upper part of the lugs. The glossy black dial, with its craquelé texture, features white gold-rimmed hour markers and Mercedes-style hands filled with tritium. This luminescent material now displays a uniform eggshell patina. The date window is positioned beneath the Cyclops lens on the flat sapphire crystal. The unidirectional rotating bezel is fitted with a black aluminium insert. Inside beats the calibre 3135. This self-winding mechanical movement operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. The watch is fitted with the Oyster 93150 steel bracelet with 501B end links. The folding clasp incorporates a diving extension.
