The history of this Rolex Submariner Date
Rolex unveiled the reference 16800 in the late 1970s. This model marked a technical evolution for the diving range. It succeeded the reference 1680 and introduced sapphire crystal as well as increased water resistance to 300 metres. Produced in 1982, the watch we are presenting here falls within this brief transitional production period. It retains the aesthetic of models from the previous decade whilst adopting modern reliability standards.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Submariner Date
The 40 mm case is machined from stainless steel. It features perforated lugs. The black dial displays ringed hour markers filled with luminescent material. The tritium has developed a patina, taking on an eggshell hue alongside the Mercedes-style hands. The date is visible through the Cyclops lens at 3 o’clock. The watch is powered by the self-winding Calibre 3035. This mechanical movement, comprising 27 jewels and beating at 28,800 vibrations per hour, provides a power reserve of 42 hours. It allows for quick date adjustment. The Oyster bracelet, reference 93150, with its 593 end pieces, secures the watch to the wrist thanks to its folding clasp.
Why this Rolex watch
Purchasing a transitional model allows you to combine a contemporary mechanical design with vintage visual elements. The appeal of this particular watch lies in its natural patina. The black bezel insert has developed a grey patina. The colour of the hour markers provides a striking contrast.
