The history of this Rolex Submariner
The history of this Rolex Submariner dates back to the introduction of the reference 1680. This model introduced the date complication to the manufacturer’s range of diving watches for the first time. Initially seen as a simple everyday function, this design set the standards for sports watches. The presence of the magnifying lens on the Plexiglas crystal alters the visual balance of the dial to create a distinctive aesthetic. This piece, dating from 1979, illustrates the transition from a technical tool to an everyday watch.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Submariner Date
The 40 mm case is crafted from stainless steel with brushed lugs and polished sides. It is topped by a bidirectional rotating bezel featuring a black aluminium insert and a prominent Plexiglas crystal. The matt black dial features Tritium-painted hour markers without metal rims. The watch as a whole displays a uniform eggshell patina, which is also evident on the original hands. This watch is powered by the calibre 1575. This self-winding mechanical movement beats at 19,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. It comprises 26 jewels and features an instant date change. The watch is fitted with a solid-link steel bracelet featuring a folding clasp and a concealed diving extension.
Why this Rolex watch
The appeal of this pre-owned model lies in the fact that its authenticity has been preserved during its recent servicing. Finding a piece from this era that has retained its original Tritium dial and hands following a service at the brand’s workshops is highly valued on the market. The watchmakers prioritised preserving the historical aesthetic by agreeing to waive the usual guarantees of chronometric accuracy and water resistance. This configuration offers a careful balance between the charm of natural patina and the reliability of a fully serviced movement.
Contents supplied and condition
This 1979 model comes with its official service card and its green suede-like carrying pouch. The watch is in good condition. The metal surfaces show signs of wear that bear witness to the watch’s history, and the lugs have been smoothed by previous polishing.
