The history of this Rolex Datejust II
Rolex unveiled the Datejust II at the Baselworld fair in 2009. This timepiece marked a major architectural turning point for the manufacturer. Since 1945, the classic model had retained its historic 36 mm diameter. With this 41 mm case, the brand responded to a demand for watches with more generous proportions. The reference 116334 features a powerful case with thick lugs and a wider bezel. It represents a distinct transitional period in the Geneva-based collections, offering a robust aesthetic prior to the introduction of the Datejust 41 with its more refined lines. The design retains the fundamental hallmarks of the original line whilst offering a distinctive presence on the wrist.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Datejust II
This 41 mm timepiece is crafted in grey Rolesor, combining a central block of Oystersteel with a fluted bezel in 18-carat white gold. The dial features a blue sunburst finish and is adorned with 12 solid baton hour-markers filled with Chromalight luminescent material. The straight hands in white gold sweep across the dial, whilst the date window at 3 o’clock displays the date beneath a Cyclops lens integrated into the sapphire crystal. The watch is powered by the self-winding calibre 3136, fitted with a blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. This chronometer-certified movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. The three-link Oyster bracelet features a combination of a rigorous brushed finish on the outer links and a mirror-polished centre. It incorporates a secure Oysterclasp folding clasp with the Easylink extension system, allowing for a 5 mm adjustment. The screw-down Twinlock crown ensures water resistance to 100 metres.
Why this Rolex watch
The Datejust II is no longer in production. It occupies a unique position in the pre-owned market thanks to its bold proportions. Collectors seek out this model for its case, which is thicker than that of current models. The blue sunburst dial remains a particularly sought-after feature on this type of watch. The combination of the robustness of steel and the lustre of white gold is a practical choice for everyday wear. The fully documented service history provides precise traceability for this example.
