The story behind this Omega Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award
In April 1970, whilst aboard Apollo 13, an oxygen tank explosion damaged the service module. To correct their return trajectory, the astronauts timed a 14-second burn using their Speedmasters. On 5 October 1970, the NASA astronauts presented the Silver Snoopy Award to Omega. This award, created in the late 1960s to recognise contributions to spaceflight safety, features the character created by Charles M. Schulz, used with the author’s kind permission. To mark the 50th anniversary of this award, Omega launched the Speedmaster Silver Snoopy Award 50th Anniversary, reference 310.32.42.50.02.001, in 2020. It follows on from the limited editions of 2003 and 2015 dedicated to the same character, whilst not being a limited edition itself. Its caseback features the phrase ‘Eyes on the Stars’, the name of the 2003 edition.
Case, movement and strap of this Speedmaster
The 42 mm stainless steel case retains the asymmetrical profile of the Moonwatch, with lyre-shaped lugs featuring brushed surfaces and polished chamfers. The bezel features a blue ceramic insert bearing the tachymeter scale in white enamel. Beneath the sapphire crystal, the 925 sterling silver dial combines a matt silver surface with three blue sub-dials. The blue baton hour-markers feature a luminescent dot, whilst the blue hour and minute hands have luminescent inserts. At 9 o’clock, the small seconds sub-dial features an embossed silver medallion depicting Snoopy in a space suit, surrounded by the inscription ‘50th Anniversary’. The sapphire crystal case back, secured by the Naiad Lock system, depicts the Moon, the Earth and a starry sky. When the chronograph is activated, a space module carrying Snoopy completes one revolution per minute, whilst the Earth rotates with the small seconds hand. The hand-wound Calibre 3861, featuring a Co-Axial escapement and a silicon balance spring, is certified as a Master Chronometer by METAS. It is resistant to magnetic fields of up to 15,000 gauss and offers a power reserve of 50 hours at 3 Hz. The blue nylon strap with cream topstitching fastens with a polished steel pin buckle stamped with the O logo.
