The history of this Omega Speedmaster 125
Launched in 1973 to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Omega brand, the Speedmaster 125 holds a unique place in the history of Swiss watchmaking. Designed as an anniversary piece, it marked a major milestone by becoming the first automatic chronograph certified as a COSC chronometer. Produced in approximately 2 000 pieces only, this Speedmaster illustrates Omega’s technical ambition in the 1970s and is now a sought-after vintage watch among collectors for its historical importance and rarity.
Case, calibre and bracelet
This Omega, reference ST 378.0801, features a 42 mm stainless steel case with a bold design characteristic of 1970s chronographs, fitted with a bezel engraved with a tachymeter scale. The black dial displays a dual-register layout, with small seconds and a day/night indicator at 9 o’clock, a date window at 3 o’clock, and luminescent indexes and hands. The watch is powered by the Omega automatic calibre 1041, a chronometer-rated version of the calibre 1040 based on the Lemania 1340, composed of 22 jewels and offering an approximate 40-hour power reserve. It’s fitted with a stainless steel bracelet with an Omega folding clasp, measuring 26 mm at the case and tapering to approximately 15.5 mm at the clasp, reminiscent of the Seamaster “Albatros” bracelet.
