The history of this Omega Speedmaster
With the Speedmaster, Omega presents a chronograph originally designed in 1957 for motor racing drivers. Its history took a new turn in 1964 when NASA secretly selected several chronographs from a Texan shop to subject them to destructive testing. The Speedmaster was the only watch to survive the thermal shocks and vibrations. It thus became the official timepiece for astronauts. The reference 311.30.42.30.01.005 follows in this tradition and carries on the characteristics of a timepiece designed for space exploration.
Case, movement and strap of this Speedmaster
This chronograph features an asymmetrical 42 mm stainless steel case. Its lyre-shaped lugs frame a matt black dial designed to absorb light and provide optimal readability contrast with its luminescent hands. The display is organised around three recessed sub-dials dedicated to the chronograph functions and the small seconds. The black bezel features a tachymeter scale. The whole is protected by a domed Hesalite crystal. The mechanical movement is powered by the hand-wound Calibre 1861, offering a 48-hour power reserve. The case is water-resistant to 50 metres. It is fitted with a steel bracelet featuring brushed and polished links, complete with a folding clasp.
Why this Omega watch
This model represents an important milestone as it houses the final iteration of the calibre 1861 before the range transitioned to coaxial movements. Owning this version allows you to preserve the watch’s historic mechanical architecture. This complete set, with its large presentation box, also offers the possibility of varying the look when worn thanks to the additional straps provided.
Contents and condition
This timepiece, dated March 2020, comes with its presentation box. This contains the black Velcro strap, the NATO-style canvas strap, the strap-changing tool, the watchmaker’s loupe, the commemorative medallion and the warranty cards. The watch has been professionally polished. The case and strap have crisp, clean surfaces. The Hesalite crystal has slight superficial scratches inherent to this material, indicating regular use which does not affect the readability of the dial.
