The history of this Omega Speedmaster
The history of Omega is closely linked to space exploration. The Speedmaster model built its reputation by becoming the first watch worn on the moon. With this reference 304.33.44.52.03.001, the manufacturer presents an evolution of the utilitarian chronograph. This version features a high-precision moon phase complication. A notable detail is the reproduction of the moon on the dial. Omega has used a high-resolution NASA image to engrave the metal-glass disc. Upon close inspection of the lunar surface, one can make out the footprint left by Neil Armstrong in 1969. A technical subtlety that anchors this timepiece in the brand’s space heritage whilst offering a rich display.
Case, movement and strap of this Speedmaster
The design of this watch is centred on a stainless steel case measuring 44.25 mm in diameter. Its distinctive asymmetrical lines are emphasised by an alternation of polished and brushed surfaces. The blue ceramic bezel features a tachymeter scale made from Liquidmetal alloy, offering enhanced durability. The blue sunburst dial catches the light and highlights the rhodium-plated hour markers fitted with luminescent material. The displays are arranged around a chronograph counter at 3 o’clock and a date indicator paired with the small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. The photorealistic moon phase disc is positioned above the 6 o’clock mark. The watch is powered by the self-winding Calibre 9904, visible through the sapphire crystal case back. This movement, certified as a Master Chronometer by METAS, features 54 jewels and offers a power reserve of 60 hours. The watch is fitted with a navy blue alligator leather strap secured by a steel folding clasp, ensuring a secure fit on the wrist. It is water-resistant to 100 metres.
Why this Omega watch
Opting for this version of the Speedmaster represents a watchmaking choice with a technical focus. It moves beyond a strictly utilitarian design to incorporate a moon phase and date display. The contrast between the sunburst dial and the ceramic bezel gives it a distinctive presence on the wrist. On the second-hand market, collectors value Master Chronometer movements for their anti-magnetic reliability and precision.
