The history of this Omega Speedmaster Mark II
This Omega is one of the most significant evolutions of the famous Speedmaster launched in the late 1950s. Introduced in 1969, the Mark II stands out with its tonneau-shaped case, a resolutely modern design for its time, conceived to offer better protection and enhanced legibility. This version reflects the spirit of late-1960s and early-1970s sports chronographs, a period during which Omega explored new aesthetic codes while preserving the technical DNA of the Speedmaster.
Case, calibre and bracelet
This Omega, reference 145.014, features a 41 mm stainless steel case characteristic of the collection’s tonneau design. It’s powered by the Omega calibre 861, a manual-winding mechanical chronograph composed of 17 jewels and operating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The black and fluorescent orange Racing dial features three subdials: small seconds at 9 o’clock, chronograph minutes at 3 o’clock and chronograph hours at 6 o’clock. The hands and hour markers are luminescent, as is the fluorescent orange chronograph hand. The watch is fitted with a stainless steel bracelet with an Omega covered folding clasp. The screw-down stainless steel case back is engraved with the Seamaster logo.
Why this watch
This Speedmaster Mark II appeals through its iconic Racing aesthetic and its decidedly vintage character. The contrast between the black dial and the fluorescent orange accents enhances legibility and recalls the world of motorsport. The calibre 861, renowned for its robustness and reliability, gives this watch strong horological legitimacy. It’s aimed at vintage chronograph enthusiasts seeking a Speedmaster different from the classic Moonwatch, with a bold visual identity and genuine historical roots.
