The history of this OMEGA Speedmaster
The House of OMEGA forged its legend in the conquest of space. During the Apollo 8 mission in 1968, astronaut Jim Lovell observed the lunar surface and declared that the moon was essentially grey. This historic observation gave birth to the OMEGA Speedmaster Grey Side of the Moon watch reference 310.92.44.50.06.001. To obtain this exact mineral shade, the Manufacture transforms a white ceramic powder into a metallic grey by heating it to 20,000 degrees Celsius in a plasma chamber. This recent iteration returns to the very essence of exploration watchmaking by abandoning automatic mechanisms for traditional manual winding.
Case, calibre and strap of this Speedmaster
The grey ceramic case measures 44.25 mm in diameter with a refined thickness of 12.97 mm. Its middle alternates polished and satin-brushed surfaces. The domed sapphire crystal protects a spectacular skeletonised brass dial. This lunar face is laser micro-structured to reproduce the craters of our natural satellite. The back of the watch reveals the hidden face of the moon through a transparent caseback. The movement is powered by the Master Chronometer-certified hand-wound calibre 3869, which offers 50 hours of power reserve. This movement beats at a frequency of 3 Hz and is water-resistant to 50 metres. The chronograph is operated by independent ceramic push-pieces. The piece is mounted on a grey braided nylon strap with a rubber lining and closes with a ceramic folding clasp.
Why this OMEGA watch
This chronograph represents a rare technical feat on the pre-owned market. The return to manual winding appeals to purist collectors who seek the tactile interaction of the historic 1969 models. The complexity of the ceramic machining and the laser decoration make this timepiece a work of art with a limited production run. Acquiring this skeletonised version offers the perfect balance between high anti-magnetic technicality and absolute space heritage.
