The history of this Omega Speedmaster
In 1957, the Omega manufacture unveiled a chronograph designed for professional racing drivers. Long before the conquest of space, the first Speedmaster met a need for instant legibility at high speed. To achieve this, the designers imagined oversized arrow-shaped hands and offset the tachymeter scale onto an outer steel bezel. This major innovation enables drivers to read their lap times without taking their eyes off the track. Reference model 3851.50.11 pays direct homage to this original aesthetic. It features the famous Broad Arrow hands that have forged the legend of the collection, while integrating the technical advances of contemporary haute horlogerie.
Case, caliber and bracelet of this Speedmaster
The architecture of this timepiece revolves around an asymmetrical 42 mm stainless steel case. Its brushed sides contrast with delicately polished chamfers to catch the light. The deep black dial features applied hour-markers and 3 azure sub-counters. The massive hands and hour markers are luminescent for optimal night-time readability. The screw-down caseback engraved with the famous seahorse guarantees water resistance to 100 meters. Beneath this solid caseback beats the automatic caliber 3303. This chronometer-certified column-wheel chronograph movement has a 55-hour power reserve and oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour with 33 jewels. The watch is adorned with an ecru-stitched black alligator leather strap secured by a steel folding clasp.
Why this Omega watch
Acquiring this edition represents a rare opportunity to combine the charm of early sports chronographs with the reliability of a modern automatic movement. Unlike the manually-wound space version, this model offers superior everyday comfort thanks to its automatic winder and date window at 6 o'clock. The presence of a column-wheel mechanism will appeal to lovers of fine mechanics, thanks to the smooth release of its push-pieces. Its purely historic aesthetic configuration makes it a cutting-edge alternative on the second-hand market.
