The story behind this Swatch MoonSwatch
In 2022, Swatch and Omega joined forces to unveil the MoonSwatch collection. This collaboration pays tribute to the famous Speedmaster worn on the moon. The SO33A100, or ‘Mission to Mercury’, stands out for its dark hues, reminiscent of the surface of the planet closest to the sun. The story behind this launch lies in the absolute secrecy maintained until the official announcement, which led to crowds gathering outside boutiques around the world. This particular model fulfils a desire to own a timepiece that is both playful and historic.
Case, movement and strap of this MoonSwatch
The 42 mm case echoes the dimensions and asymmetrical geometry of the original Speedmaster. It is crafted from bioceramic, an exclusive material comprising two-thirds ceramic and one-third castor oil, giving it a silky-smooth feel and making it exceptionally lightweight. The matt grey dial features three black sub-dials characteristic of the chronograph. The hands and hour markers are coated with luminescent material for optimal readability in the dark. The black bezel features the famous tachymeter scale with a dot above the number 90. This model is powered by the ETA quartz calibre. The dark grey fabric strap with a hook-and-loop fastening is inspired by the straps of space suits. The watch is water-resistant to 30 metres.
Why this Swatch watch
This ‘Mission to Mercury’ variant is sought after for its monochrome aesthetic, reminiscent of the historic Moonwatch. The combination of anthracite grey and black gives it a discreet and versatile look on the wrist. The difficulty in finding it in official shops enhances its appeal on the second-hand market. It offers an affordable gateway to Omega’s heritage whilst retaining Swatch’s quirky character. It is a comfortable watch for everyday wear.
