The story behind this Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty Fathoms
Blancpain made watchmaking history in 1953 with the creation of the Fifty Fathoms, designed for military divers in the French Navy. This model laid the foundations for the diving watch with its graduated rotating bezel. The collaboration with Swatch pays tribute to this heritage through the SO35A100 reference, a version dedicated to the Atlantic Ocean. The model’s name refers to its depth rating, as 50 fathoms correspond to a depth of 91 metres – the limit reached by the pioneers of scuba diving. The transparent case back reveals a printed illustration of the nudibranch Glaucus atlanticus, a marine creature found in this ocean.

The case, measuring 42 mm in diameter and 14 mm thick, is crafted from blue Bioceramic, an alloy comprising two-thirds ceramic and one-third bio-based material. The dial features a vivid blue centre that darkens towards the edge, adorned with syringe-shaped hands coated in luminescent material. The unidirectional rotating bezel incorporates a blue insert protected by a glossy coating. A date window is positioned between the 4 o’clock and 5 o’clock marks. The Sistem51 automatic movement guarantees a power reserve of 90 hours. It is assembled around a single central screw and fitted with a Nivachron balance spring. The braided fabric strap is made from recycled fishing nets and is attached to the case via perforated lugs.
