The history of this Rolex Milgauss
Rolex launched the Milgauss model in 1956 to meet the technical requirements of engineers and researchers. Designed specifically for scientists at CERN in Geneva, this watch features an internal magnetic shield enabling it to withstand magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. The reference 116400GV was introduced in 2007 to mark the range’s fiftieth anniversary. It is characterised by its green sapphire crystal. The manufacturing process for this component proved so complex that the manufacture chose not to patent it, considering it impossible for a third party to reproduce.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Milgauss
The 40 mm diameter case is crafted from Oystersteel and features a smooth, polished bezel. The matt black dial features applied hour markers. The markers at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock are coated with orange luminescent material. The seconds are indicated by a central lightning-shaped hand in the same shade. The self-winding mechanical Calibre 3131 movement beats at a frequency of 4 Hz and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. It is fitted with a paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and protected by a ferromagnetic shield. Water resistance is guaranteed to 100 metres. The steel Oyster bracelet features polished centre links and brushed outer links. It is secured by an Oysterclasp clasp fitted with the Easylink extension system for a 5 mm adjustment.
