The history of this Rolex Milgauss
Rolex launched the Milgauss in 1956 to meet the needs of engineers and scientists at CERN, located on the French-Swiss border. These professionals worked in highly magnetic environments that disrupted the accuracy of conventional mechanical watches. Rolex therefore developed an internal shield made of a ferromagnetic alloy to protect the movement from magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. The reference 116400GV represents the modern evolution of this technical range. When it was launched in 2007, the green sapphire crystal fitted to this model proved so complex to produce that the manufacture chose not to file a patent, believing that no other brand would be able to reproduce it with the same level of expertise.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Milgauss
The 40 mm case, crafted from Oystersteel, features flowing lines and a fully polished bezel. The zirconium blue sunburst dial offers reflections ranging from azure to turquoise depending on the ambient light. It is graced by a matt orange seconds hand shaped like a lightning bolt, evoking the model’s scientific heritage. The Calibre 3131 automatic movement provides a power reserve of 48 hours. The Oyster bracelet combines polished centre links with brushed outer links, complemented by a folding clasp incorporating the Easylink quick-adjustment system.
Why this Rolex watch
Discontinued in 2023, this timepiece holds a unique place amongst collectors. The combination of the Z-Blue dial and green sapphire crystal represents one of the brand’s few truly colourful offerings. This unconventional aesthetic, coupled with a rich scientific history, makes it a distinctive landmark in contemporary watchmaking history. The definitive end to its production has now limited its availability and reinforced its appeal on the second-hand market.
