The history of this Rolex Milgauss
In 1956, the House of Rolex unveiled a timepiece with a scientific vocation that met the rigorous requirements of researchers at the European Organisation for Nuclear Research based in Geneva. Exposed to intense magnetic fields that could throw traditional mechanical watches out of whack by as little as 50 gauss, these engineers needed a reliable instrument. The Rolex Milgauss 116400 takes its name from its ability to withstand a magnetic induction of 1000 gauss. To mark this feat, the Manufacture has equipped the dial with a central second hand in the shape of an orange lightning bolt. This bold design feature underlines the electromagnetic energy that this watch manages to tame thanks to avant-garde engineering.
Case, calibre and strap of this Milgauss
Moulded from a block of corrosion-resistant Oystersteel steel, the case measures 40 mm in diameter and is around 13 mm thick. The case middle and smooth bezel feature a brilliant mirror polish that contrasts with the brushed finish of the screw-down case back. Protected by a colourless sapphire crystal replaced as new in 2025, the matt black dial has naturally developed a rare pitted patina known as Stardust. This organic ageing gives a unique visual depth to the applied white gold hour-markers and the orange lacquered hand. The calibre 3131 automatic movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and guarantees a power reserve of 48 hours. Protected by a non-magnetic soft iron inner shield and fitted with 31 jewels, this exclusive mechanism ensures perfect chronometry. The whole is mounted on its steel Oyster bracelet, adjusted to 11 links and secured by an ergonomic folding clasp.
Why this Rolex watch
This specific iteration represents an exciting opportunity in the second-hand market. Completely discontinued by the manufacture, the version equipped with a clear sapphire crystal had a shorter production period than the famous declination with green crystal. This absolute transparency makes it possible to reproduce the black colour of the dial with unequalled visual purity. The natural appearance of the stardust patina transforms this reference into a truly singular timepiece. The purchaser benefits from a watch that brings together the brand's historic DNA and a time-altered aesthetic in an exceptionally desirable way.
