The history of this Rolex GMT-Master II
The Geneva-based Maison has forged its legend by meeting the needs of aviation professionals. Born in the middle of the 20th century to equip Pan Am pilots crossing time zones aboard the first commercial jets, the collection has constantly evolved. The model presented here marks a major technological turning point. Introduced in the mid-2000s, reference 116713LN propelled the range into absolute modernity. In particular, it introduced a case with enlarged proportions and, above all, a scratch-resistant ceramic bezel insert. This technical material has definitively replaced the aluminium of previous generations. To underline its heritage, the Manufacture has adorned the second time zone hand and the model name on the dial with a deep green, a true chromatic signature of the brand.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this GMT-Master II
This 40 mm-diameter timepiece is crafted in yellow Rolesor, an exclusive alloy combining the robustness of Oystersteel 904L steel with the unalterable brilliance of 18-carat yellow gold. The bi-directional rotating bezel houses a black Cerachrom insert whose 24-hour graduations are coated with a thin layer of gold by physical vapour deposition. The black lacquered dial is protected by a sapphire crystal featuring the famous Cyclops magnifying glass above the date window. At the heart of this timepiece beats the self-winding Calibre 3186, a Manufacture movement with Superlative Chronometer certification. Equipped with 31 jewels and oscillating at a frequency of 4 hertz, it guarantees a power reserve of 48 hours. The watch is dressed in a three-row Oyster bracelet, alternating satin finishes on the steel and polished finishes on the central gold, secured by an Oysterlock clasp incorporating the Easylink comfort extension system.
Why this Rolex watch
Now withdrawn from the manufacture's official catalogue, this two-tone configuration with black bezel has become a particularly sought-after piece for discerning enthusiasts. It offers a perfect balance between the luxurious aesthetics of solid gold and the sobriety of a deep black dial. The touch of green on the GMT hand adds a singularity not found on more recent models in the range. Acquiring this version makes it possible to own the very first generation of contemporary ceramic sports models, a milestone in the evolution of modern watch design.
