The history of this Rolex Explorer II
Rolex developed this model in 1971 to meet the needs of cavers. In the total darkness of underground environments, losing track of time becomes a risk. The large 24-hour hand and the fixed graduated bezel thus made it possible to distinguish between day and night. The reference 16570 builds on this technical approach by offering independent adjustment of the hour hand. This feature allows a second time zone to be read very intuitively. The watch retains a robust, utilitarian aesthetic whilst adapting to the needs of travellers.
Case, movement and strap of this Explorer II
The 40 mm stainless steel case features polished sides and brushed surfaces on the tops of the lugs. The fixed bezel features 24-hour numerals engraved into the metal and filled with black. The dark dial features geometric hour markers in white gold to prevent tarnishing over time. A flat sapphire crystal protects the dial and incorporates a magnifying lens to facilitate reading the date. This timepiece is powered by the calibre 3185. This self-winding mechanical movement offers a power reserve of 50 hours. It oscillates at a frequency of 4 Hz and is water-resistant to 100 metres thanks to the screw-down crown. The brushed steel bracelet fastens with an Oysterlock safety clasp.
Why this Rolex watch
This 1995 edition stands out for its Tritium dial. This vintage luminescent material reacts over the years, developing a warm-toned patina – a historical detail much appreciated by collectors. The second-hand market makes it possible to find these transitional configurations, which no longer appear in the brand’s official catalogue. This model combines the reliability of a professional timepiece with a low-key appearance on the wrist.
Contents and condition
This 1995 model comes with a green Rolex carrying pouch. The watch is in very good overall condition and has just been carefully polished. The radial brushing on the bezel remains crisp and even. The lugs retain their fine shape and the bracelet is still firm for its age.
