The history of this Rolex Explorer II
In 1971, Rolex introduced a timepiece designed for cavers and polar explorers. In these extreme environments, where there is no natural light, it becomes difficult to distinguish between day and night. The Explorer II meets this need thanks to its large additional hand, combined with a fixed bezel graduated over 24 hours. The Rolex Explorer II 216570 model marks the 40th anniversary of this line by reintroducing the orange arrow, a direct reference to the original generation known to collectors as the ‘Freccione’.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Explorer II
The 42 mm round case is crafted from Oystersteel, a corrosion-resistant stainless steel alloy. It features a fixed bezel with a brushed finish, with the 24-hour markings engraved into the material. The matt black dial offers a sharp contrast to the white gold hour-markers filled with luminescent material. On this black version, the bases of the hands are painted black to create the illusion that they are floating. The movement is powered by the calibre 3187, a self-winding mechanism offering a 48-hour power reserve and operating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This 31-jewel calibre controls the hour, date and second time zone functions. Water resistance is guaranteed to 100 metres. The brushed steel Oyster bracelet is secured by an Oysterlock folding clasp.
Why this Rolex watch
This model is of interest on the pre-owned market as it represents the final iteration of the Explorer II before the range was revamped. Collectors appreciate the black dial for its ‘ghost hand’ effect, a visual feature absent from the white version. Contents and condition
This watch comes complete with its green box, outer box, card holder, user manuals and warranty card dated September 2015. The watch has been worn and shows normal signs of wear for its age, notably superficial scratches on the brushed bezel and on the clasp of the strap. This condition attests to its use. A cosmetic refresh by polishing is available on request.
