The history of this Rolex Datejust
In 1945, to mark its 40th anniversary, Rolex unveiled the Datejust, the first automatic, water-resistant chronometer wristwatch to display the date in a window on the dial. In 1953, the Cyclops lens was added to this date window at 3 o’clock, defining the model’s silhouette for many years to come. The Rolex Datejust 16200 belongs to the generation fitted with the calibre 3135, a sapphire crystal and a quick-set date, produced from the late 1980s to the mid-2000s. It retains the 36 mm steel Oyster case and features a smooth, polished bezel, whereas the 16220 has a guilloché bezel and the 16234 a fluted bezel in white gold. This example features a white dial with applied Roman numerals and comes with its original papers dated January 2010.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Datejust
The steel Oyster case measures 36 mm in diameter. Its monobloc middle case, solid screw-down case back with fluted edge and screw-down crown stamped with the Rolex logo ensure water resistance to 100 m. The sapphire crystal features the Cyclops lens above the date at 3 o’clock. The white dial features applied Roman numerals, a Rolex crown at 12 o’clock, a black railway-track minute track and the inscription ‘Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified’. The in-house Calibre 3135, a self-winding movement, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour on 31 jewels and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. Certified as a chronometer by the COSC, it drives a quick-set date and features a stop-seconds mechanism. The Oyster 78360 bracelet, with three rows of brushed steel links, is fitted with 558B end pieces tailored to the case and an Oyster folding clasp bearing the Rolex crown.
Why this Rolex watch
This Datejust 36 retains the model’s original proportions, with a smooth bezel that reflects light without drawing the eye. The 36 mm case slips easily under a cuff and suits most wrists. Its automatic movement powered much of the Oyster collection for over 30 years, and this particular watch has just been serviced. On the second-hand market, this discontinued reference offers a complete Datejust, complete with its original case and documentation.
