The history of this Rolex Datejust
The history of the Datejust began in 1945 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Geneva-based manufacturer. Rolex then unveiled a water-resistant, self-winding chronometer featuring a date window on the dial. The major innovation lay in its jumping date mechanism, which changed instantly at midnight. Introduced in the late 1980s, the reference 16200 exemplifies this technical evolution. Produced in the 1990s, it marked the transition to modern movements whilst retaining tritium dials. The date window on this particular example displays an open ‘4’, a typography specific to that era.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Datejust
The stainless steel case measures 36 mm. The smooth steel bezel frames a flat sapphire crystal fitted with the Cyclops lens. The silver sunburst dial catches the light and complements the cool reflections of the steel. The applied white gold hour markers prevent oxidation. The hands and hour markers bear the inscription ‘T SWISS MADE T’, confirming the use of tritium, which has developed a subtle patina. The self-winding mechanical movement is the calibre 3135. This movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 48 hours. The original water resistance was guaranteed to 100 metres. This example comes with two steel bracelets. The 5-link Jubilee bracelet adorns the watch, whilst a 3-link Oyster bracelet, supplied in its original packaging, offers a sportier alternative.
