The history of this Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra
Omega launched the Seamaster in 1948, a watch designed for the city, the sea and the countryside. In 2002, the brand revisited this concept with the Aqua Terra, whose name combines the Latin words for ‘sea’ and ‘land’. The range is aimed at yachtsmen who want a watch robust enough for sailing yet understated enough for city wear. In 2008, Omega introduced the collection’s vertical-striped dial, inspired by the teak decks of yachts, which has since become its signature feature. The Seamaster Aqua Terra 231.10.39.61.06.001 is the 38.5 mm quartz version, featuring the same striped dial as the automatic models of its generation. Subsequent quartz versions would feature a more understated dial, which sets this model apart within the range.
Case, movement and strap of this Seamaster Aqua Terra
The round steel case measures 38.5 mm in diameter, with 19 mm between the lugs. The smooth, domed bezel is mirror-polished, as are the sides, whilst the tops of the lugs are brushed and accented with a polished chamfer. The fluted crown features the Omega logo at its tip. The solid caseback is stamped with the embossed seahorse, the emblem of the Seamaster range. A domed sapphire crystal protects the anthracite-grey dial with fine vertical stripes. The facetted applied hour markers are fitted with a luminescent insert, as are the hour and minute hands, the latter featuring an arrow-shaped tip. The central seconds hand has a luminescent tip and the date is displayed in a window at 3 o’clock. The calibre 1538 is an Omega quartz movement developed on an ETA base. It offers a battery life of approximately 42 months and incorporates a low-battery indicator, which signals when the battery needs replacing. The watch is water-resistant to 150 m. The three-row steel bracelet alternates between satin-finished links and polished edges. Its links are assembled with screws and it fastens with a folding clasp, the brushed cover of which bears the engraved Omega logo.
Why choose this Omega watch
The quartz movement makes this Aqua Terra a low-maintenance watch. It keeps accurate time even if not worn every day and requires no winding. Maintenance is limited to changing the battery and the accompanying water resistance test. With a diameter of 38.5 mm, it suits most wrists and slips effortlessly under a shirt cuff. This model is no longer in production and is now only available second-hand. It showcases the Aqua Terra’s design and the contrasting finishes typical of an Omega case, in a watch designed for everyday wear.
Contents and condition
The watch is supplied as a full set, in its lacquered wooden Omega presentation box with its cream-coloured pouch. The international warranty card and the pictogram card, both bearing the watch’s reference number, are included, along with two spare links. The watch has just been polished. The case, bezel and bracelet show no visible signs of wear, and the edges of the lugs remain sharp. For the buyer, this is a watch that looks very much like a new one, ready to be worn upon receipt.
