The story behind this Chopard Mille Miglia GT XL GMT
This Chopard Mille Miglia GT XL GMT is part of the Classic Racing collection, which the Maison has dedicated to the 1,000-mile Italian race between Brescia and Rome, in which it has participated since 1988. Launched in 2008 under reference number 168514-3001, it builds on the Gran Turismo XL and adds a second time zone designed for travellers. The model also marks a first for Chopard with a depiction of the Earth at the centre of the dial, surrounded by a 24-hour scale. The design language remains that of a racing car, with a flange graduated in 5-minute intervals, a railway-track minute track with red dots, the red ‘1000 Miglia’ logo on the dial and the racing arrow engraved on the crown.
Case, calibre and strap of this Mille Miglia GT XL GMT
The polished steel case measures 44 mm in diameter, with wide lugs and a screw-down crown, ensuring water resistance to 100 m. The black dial features oversized ‘12’ and ‘6’ numerals and applied hour markers in Superluminova, as do the hour and minute hands. In the centre, the globe and its 24-hour scale are indicated by a hollowed-out red hand, whilst the central seconds hand ends in a red tip. The date is displayed at 3 o’clock beneath a magnifying lens integrated into the sapphire crystal. The sapphire caseback reveals the ETA A07.171 self-winding calibre, COSC-certified as a chronometer, with 24 jewels and a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. Its oscillating weight, decorated with Côtes de Genève, bears a plate signed ‘Chopard’. The black rubber strap is modelled on the profile of a racing tyre and fastens with a steel folding clasp engraved with ‘Chopard’.
Why this Chopard watch
This steel-and-rubber version is no longer featured in the brand’s catalogue and is therefore only available second-hand. It combines a GMT function, a COSC-certified movement and a case water-resistant to 100 m, making it a travel watch capable of keeping up with an active lifestyle. The 24-hour scale distinguishes between day and night in the second time zone, a useful feature for keeping track of the time back home whilst travelling. The large luminescent numerals ensure the time is legible at a glance, whether in direct sunlight or in a dark car interior. Finally, the folding clasp prevents the rubber strap from becoming twisted every time the watch is put on.
