The story behind this Chopard Mille Miglia GT XL
The Chopard Mille Miglia GT XL pays tribute to the Italian motor race with which the Geneva-based company has been a partner since 1988. Founded in 1927 by four enthusiasts from Brescia, the Mille Miglia saw the finest drivers tackle 1,600 kilometres of Italian roads, until it was suspended in 1957. It resumed in 1977, and the Scheufele family, owners of Chopard, took part at the wheel of vintage cars, led by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele. To mark the race’s 80th anniversary in 2007, Chopard unveiled the Mille Miglia Gran Turismo XL Chrono, a 44 mm chronograph with pushers integrated into the case. Alongside two limited editions featuring a caseback engraved with the race route, the black-dial version, reference 168459-3001, joined the permanent collection with a sapphire caseback offering a view of the movement.
Case, calibre and strap of this Mille Miglia GT XL
The steel case measures 44 mm in diameter. Its rectangular push-buttons extend the case, and the screw-down crown, stamped with the race’s logo, contributes to a water resistance of 100 metres. The steel bezel features an engraved tachymeter scale. The two-tiered black dial features large applied numerals at 12 and 6 o’clock coated in Superluminova, the small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock, the 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock and the 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock. The chronograph seconds hand is tipped with a red arrow, echoing the Mille Miglia logo printed on the dial. A magnifying lens integrated into the sapphire crystal enlarges the date at 3 o’clock, making it legible at a glance. The automatic calibre, based on the ETA Valgranges A07.211 and COSC-certified as a chronometer, features 25 jewels, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of approximately 46 hours. Through the sapphire crystal case back, the oscillating weight, adorned with Côtes de Genève finishing, remains visible. The black rubber strap echoes the tread pattern of 1960s Dunlop Racing tyres and fastens with a steel folding clasp bearing the Chopard logo.
Why this Chopard watch
This GT XL offers everything one would expect from a motor racing chronograph, with a chronometer-certified movement, easy-to-read sub-dials and a tachymeter scale that calculates average speed over a known distance. It has been discontinued by the brand and is now only available second-hand. This example of the automatic chronograph retains its presentation box and its two certificates, which attest to its provenance and the certification of its movement. The supple rubber strap and folding clasp make the 44 mm case comfortable to wear. For a motor racing enthusiast, it links the wearer’s wrist to a race in which the Scheufele family themselves take part.
