The history of this Chopard Mille Miglia Gran Turismo XL
The House of Chopard maintains a fusional link with the world of classic motor racing. Under the impetus of its passionate co-president and regular driver of the famous Italian event linking Brescia to Rome, the Mille Miglia collection was created in 1988. It quickly established itself as the absolute benchmark in automobile-inspired watchmaking. One of the most remarkable signatures of this line lies in its atypical attachment. The brand had the brilliant idea of sculpting natural rubber to reproduce exactly the tread of the Dunlop Racing CR65 tyre used in the 1960s. This Chopard Mille Miglia Gran Turismo XL watch reference 168997-3001 perfectly embodies this sporting and elegant heritage.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Mille Miglia Gran Turismo XL
The imposing stainless steel case measures 44 mm in diameter and features a fully polished finish. It is topped by a smooth bezel framing a sapphire crystal with a particularly dense anti-reflective coating. This technical treatment generates a captivating bluish reflection in certain lights and protects a deep black dial. The dial features large Arabic numerals at 12 and 6 o'clock and a date window topped by a magnifying glass integrated into the crystal. Beneath the transparent caseback is the self-winding Calibre 7111. This COSC-certified chronometer movement is fitted with 24 jewels and beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, offering a power reserve of 46 hours. The screw-down caseback and solid crown ensure water resistance to 100 metres. The whole is worn on the famous black rubber strap with a tyre motif secured by a polished steel folding clasp.
Why this Chopard watch
This collector's piece appeals to lovers of fine mechanics and historic vehicles. Its assertive 44 mm diameter gives it a sculptural presence on the wrist while retaining optimal comfort thanks to the ergonomics of its lugs and streamlined bracelet. Now discontinued, this precise 3-hand version offers a more streamlined reading of time than the busier chronograph versions. The striking contrast between the mirror-polished steel, the matt black dial and the bright red accents of the mythical logo makes it a true icon of contemporary watch design.
