The history of this Rolex GMT-Master II Sprite
Rolex designed the GMT-Master for airline pilots, who needed to be able to read the time in two time zones at a single glance. Among the vintage models, a handful of left-hand-wound examples were produced for left-handed pilots, and have become highly sought-after pieces. In 2022, the brand surprised collectors by unveiling the reference 126720VTNR, a GMT-Master II with the crown and its protective shoulder positioned on the left-hand side of the case, and a date window moved to the 9 o’clock position. Its bezel combines green and black – a combination never before seen at Rolex – with a shade of green exclusive to this model. These two colours, reminiscent of a well-known fizzy drink, have earned it the nickname ‘Rolex Sprite’, whilst some enthusiasts refer to it as the ‘Destro’.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this GMT-Master II Sprite
The 40 mm Oyster case is crafted from Oystersteel, an alloy from the 904L steel family chosen for its corrosion resistance. The monobloc case features a screw-down caseback and a Triplock crown, ensuring water resistance to 100 metres. The bidirectional rotating bezel is fitted with a Cerachrom ceramic disc graduated over 24 hours, with moulded numerals and markings. Beneath the sapphire crystal, the black dial features round, rectangular and triangular hour markers in blue-glowing Chromalight, whilst the Cyclops lens magnifies the date. The green 24-hour hand indicates the reference time zone on the bezel, whilst the hour hand is adjusted in jumps, without affecting the minutes or seconds. The in-house calibre 3285, with bidirectional automatic winding via a Perpetual rotor, beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour on 31 jewels and offers a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. Its paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers contribute to its Superlative Chronometer certification, which guarantees a precision of -2 to +2 seconds per day, once the watch is fully assembled. The 5-row Jubilee bracelet, created in 1945 for the Datejust, fastens with an Oysterlock folding clasp that prevents accidental opening. Between the two brushed outer rows, the three polished central rows reflect light in subtle flashes on the wrist.
Why this Rolex watch
At authorised retailers, the GMT-Master with a green and black bezel is rarely available without a long wait, and its Jubilee version complements both sportswear and a suit. This example, dated September 2026, is ready to wear immediately, with the Rolex warranty still valid. The left-hand crown is primarily designed for left-handers who wear their watch on their right wrist and for collectors who already own a classic Rolex sports watch.
