The history of this Rolex GMT-Master II
In 1955, Rolex designed the GMT-Master for pilots at Pan American World Airways, who needed to keep track of two time zones during long-haul flights. Since then, a hand that completes a full rotation of the dial in 24 hours – read against a rotating bezel graduated in 24-hour increments – maintains the reference time whilst the hour hand displays the local time. In 2023, the brand introduced a grey and black Cerachrom bezel on the GMT-Master II models in yellow gold and Rolesor. The following year, at Watches and Wonders 2024, it launched a version in Oystersteel with the reference 126710GRNR, completing this trio. Collectors immediately nicknamed it ‘Bruce Wayne’, in a nod to the blue-and-black-bezeled Batman GMT-Master II, of which it is said to be the more discreet ‘civilian’ counterpart.
Case, movement and bracelet of this GMT-Master II
The 40 mm Oyster case in Oystersteel, an alloy from the 904L steel family developed by Rolex, features a monobloc case with polished sides and brushed lugs on top. The case back and Triplock crown are screw-down, the sapphire crystal protects the dial and the watch is water-resistant to 100 metres. The bidirectional rotating bezel features a grey and black Cerachrom insert with numerals and graduations moulded into the ceramic. The black lacquered dial features Chromalight hour-markers and hands with long-lasting blue luminescence, whilst the ‘GMT-Master II’ inscription and the 24-hour hand are tinted green. The Rolex-manufactured calibre 3285, with automatic winding via a Perpetual rotor, offers a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. Its paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers ensure a precision of plus or minus 2 seconds per day, tested on the finished watch in accordance with Superlative Chronometer certification. The hour hand is adjusted in jumps, independently of the minutes, to change time zones without losing the reference time. The Oyster bracelet, featuring three rows of solid links – brushed on the sides and polished in the centre – fastens with an Oysterlock folding clasp with a 5 mm Easylink comfort extension.
Why this Rolex watch
Like most of Rolex’s professional steel models, the GMT-Master II is rarely available immediately in official boutiques. This October 2025 model is ready to wear straight away, complete with its original receipt and a Rolex warranty still valid for several years. Other steel GMT-Master II models feature red, blue or green accents. The grey and black bezel matches the tones of the case and dial, and the touch of green on the dial is enough to identify the model. The Oyster bracelet, sportier than the Jubilee, gives it an instrument-like look that is equally suited to travel and smart city wear.
