The history of this Rolex GMT-Master II
Rolex first developed the range in the mid-1950s to meet the needs of airline pilots travelling across multiple time zones. The reference 126720VTNR broke with convention when it was launched. Nicknamed ‘Sprite’ by collectors, it introduced a brand-new configuration for left-handers. To reposition the crown and the date window at 9 o’clock, the manufacturer did not simply rotate the movement. It had to rethink the internal architecture of the date disc and modify its testing and chronometric certification protocols to evaluate the watch in unusual positions.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this GMT-Master II
The 40 mm monobloc case is machined from Oystersteel and features polished sides that contrast with the brushed finish of the lugs. It incorporates a bidirectional rotating bezel graduated over 24 hours, fitted with a two-tone black and green Cerachrom ceramic insert. The black lacquered dial features large geometric hour markers and white gold hands, including a large green hand dedicated to the second time zone. The date display is clearly visible under the Cyclops lens, which has been moved to the left. The watch is powered by the calibre 3285, a self-winding mechanical movement offering a 70-hour power reserve. The 5-link steel Jubilee bracelet ensures comfort and is secured by an Oysterlock clasp fitted with the Easylink extension.
