The history of this Rolex GMT-Master II
Reference 116710LN was launched in 2007 and marked a decisive technical evolution in the brand’s professional range. For the very first time on a steel model, it introduced the black Cerachrom ceramic bezel insert, a material that is scratch-resistant and impervious to ultraviolet rays. This model also introduced the case with wider lugs and the Maxi Dial for optimal readability. The green hand for the second time zone subtly echoes the manufacture’s iconic colour, a colour choice originally conceived to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original watch. Designed to meet the needs of frequent travellers, it allows two time zones to be read simultaneously, clearly and instantly.
Case, movement and bracelet of this GMT-Master II
The 40 mm case, crafted from Oystersteel, houses a deep lacquered black dial. The geometric hour-markers and hands incorporate Super-LumiNova luminescent material for precise reading in the dark. The bidirectional rotating bezel, graduated to 24 hours, features recessed numerals. The Triplock system on the screw-down crown ensures water resistance to 100 metres. The movement is powered by the self-winding Calibre 3186, oscillating at a frequency of 4 Hz. It delivers a power reserve of approximately 48 hours and features the paramagnetic blue Parachrom hairspring, offering excellent stability in the face of temperature fluctuations. The three-link Oyster bracelet alternates between a mirror-polished centre and brushed outer edges. It fastens with an Oysterlock safety folding clasp incorporating the 5 mm extension system.
Why this Rolex watch
Production of this version with a black bezel ceased in 2019, making this monochrome design highly prized by collectors seeking understated elegance. The contrast of the green against the black background gives it a strong yet understated identity, perfectly suited to everyday wear. The appeal of this example lies in its recent inclusion in the manufacturer’s certified programme, which validates its mechanical integrity according to rigorous standards.
