The story behind this Chopard Happy Sport
Launched in 1993, the Chopard Happy Sport made the Geneva-based Maison the first to combine steel and diamonds in a watch – a bold move that was unprecedented in watchmaking at the time. Its design features seven moving diamonds that glide freely between two sapphire crystals, above the dial. More than 30 years after its launch, these free-moving diamonds remain the hallmark of the collection, which has since expanded to include gold and self-winding movements. The reference 274808-5014 features an 18-carat rose gold version in a 36 mm case, with a bezel entirely set with diamonds and a grey dial that tempers the metal’s brilliance.
Case, movement and strap of this Happy Sport
The 36 mm round case in polished 18-carat rose gold is extended by lyre-shaped lugs secured by facetted-head screws. The bezel is set with a row of brilliant-cut diamonds totalling 1.96 carats, and the facetted crown is topped with a cabochon sapphire. The grey guilloché and brushed dial features rose gold-tone applied Roman numerals, rose gold leaf-shaped hands and a date window at 4.30. The seven moving diamonds, set in closed settings within rose gold bezels, total 0.35 carats. The automatic calibre beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, features 25 jewels and offers a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. The movement is visible through a sapphire crystal caseback secured by six screws and engraved with ‘Happy Sport’, featuring an oscillating weight decorated with Côtes de Genève and signed ‘Chopard Genève’. Water-resistant to 30 metres, the watch is fitted with a grey brushed fabric strap lined with leather, 18 mm wide at the clasp, fastened with a rose gold pin buckle signed Chopard.
Why this Chopard watch
This version with a grey dial and strap is no longer featured in the brand’s Swiss catalogue. The current rose gold versions of the same size retain the gem-set bezel, but feature a silver or mother-of-pearl dial. It can therefore only be found on the second-hand market. It features a solid rose gold case, a total of 2.31 carats of diamonds and an automatic movement visible through the caseback, all within a 36 mm diameter. The grey of the dial and strap tones down the rose gold and diamonds, making it easy to wear every day.
Contents and condition
The watch is supplied in its original Chopard box, without documentation. It is in good condition. The case and bezel show slight signs of wear, and all the diamonds on the bezel and dial are in place. The brushed fabric strap shows clear signs of wear, with marked holes and a stained lining. The rose gold case can be polished on request at the time of sale to restore the lustre of its polished surfaces.
