The history of this Breguet Marine
Breguet occupies a unique place in naval history. In 1815, King Louis XVIII appointed Abraham-Louis Breguet as Watchmaker to the Royal Navy. This title demanded absolute precision for navigation. The modern Marine collection draws its inspiration from this heritage. Under the leadership of Nicolas Hayek in the early 2000s, the brand reimagined this line to combine technical rigour with everyday wearability. The reference 5817BR/Z2/5V8 exemplifies this transition. It incorporates the manufacture’s traditional design codes whilst adopting contemporary materials such as rubber to suit an active lifestyle.
Case, movement and strap of this Marine Grande Date
The 18-carat rose gold case measures 39 mm in diameter and is 12 mm thick. Its sides feature the vertical fluting characteristic of the manufacture. The black rhodium-plated gold dial features a finely hand-guilloché wave pattern in the centre. A silver-toned hour ring is set with applied Roman numerals. The hollow-tipped hands incorporate a luminescent material for clear readability in the dark. At 6 o’clock, a double window displays the large date. The watch is powered by the Calibre 517GG automatic movement. Visible through the sapphire crystal case back, this mechanism offers a power reserve of 65 hours and beats at a frequency of 4 Hz. It is fitted with 35 jewels and an 18-carat rose gold oscillating weight decorated with a guilloché pattern. Water resistance is guaranteed to 100 metres thanks to a screw-down crown. The watch is worn on a black rubber strap fastened with an 18-carat rose gold folding clasp.
Why this Breguet watch
This combination of rose gold and a dark dial creates a striking visual contrast. It combines the high standards of fine watchmaking with a casual style. The large date is a sought-after complication that makes the time easy to read on a daily basis. On the pre-owned market, it represents an opportunity to acquire a historic timepiece with a distinctive design. Wearing it on a rubber strap lightens the weight of the gold and provides a pleasant balance on the wrist.
Contents and condition
This piece comes with its original wooden presentation box and user manuals. A certificate of value issued by the manufacturer in 2018 replaces the original warranty card and certifies the watch’s serial numbers. A second leather strap is also included in the lot. The watch shows signs of wear, with micro-scratches on the polished bezel and clasp, indicating regular wear. The precious metal can be restored to its original appearance by polishing, upon the buyer’s request.
