The history of this Breguet Tradition
Breguet occupies a unique place in the history of watchmaking. At the end of the 18th century, to overcome the economic difficulties of the French Revolution, Abraham-Louis Breguet invented the subscription watch. The principle involved a deposit paid upon ordering to finance the manufacture of a refined and reliable timepiece. To achieve this, he designed a symmetrical calibre featuring a large central barrel. The Tradition collection, to which the reference 7097BB/G1/9WU belongs, faithfully reproduces this architecture. This timepiece pays direct homage to the mechanical expertise of its founder, incorporating the famous shock-absorber at 4 o’clock, the forerunner of modern anti-shock systems.
Case, movement and strap of this Tradition
This timepiece features an 18-carat white gold case measuring 40 mm in diameter and 11 mm thick. Its middle section is finely fluted, an aesthetic signature of the manufacture. Beneath the sapphire crystal, the off-centre dial at 12 o’clock is crafted from silvered 18-carat gold and hand-guilloché. It is adorned with blued steel hands featuring hollowed-out bulbs. The dial features a retrograde seconds complication at 10 o’clock. The movement is the self-winding calibre 505SR1, offering a 50-hour power reserve and operating at a frequency of 3 Hz. The transparent case back reveals a white gold oscillating weight, inspired by vintage pocket watches. The watch is fitted with a black alligator leather strap with large scales, fastened by a white gold pin buckle. It is water-resistant to 30 metres.
Why this Breguet watch
Acquiring such a timepiece on the second-hand market provides access to a highly sophisticated technical expression of traditional haute horlogerie. The visual contrast between the anthracite-grey shot-blasted finish of the bridges and the guilloché finish of the dial lends the watch an intriguing aesthetic depth. This model strikes a perfect balance between respect for a technical heritage and contemporary craftsmanship. This timepiece is particularly well-suited to the pre-owned market for enthusiasts seeking a strong visual identity and complete mechanical legibility.
