The history of this Porsche Design Dashboard Chronograph
The House of Porsche Design has its roots in the pure vision of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who founded the design studio in 1972 after designing the legendary 911. His objective was clear: to bring the absolute functionality of automotive instruments to the wrists of enthusiasts. The Dashboard collection embodies this philosophy of instant readability and performance. Reference 6612.69 perfectly illustrates this approach, offering a striking contrast between the sophistication of fine watchmaking and the brutal aesthetics of racing circuits. The most fascinating anecdote about this model is revealed by turning the watch over, because the oscillating weight of the automatic movement is not a simple piece of metal. It has been rigorously machined to reproduce on a miniature scale the exact light-alloy rim of the contemporary 911 Carrera when it first came out. This surgical attention to technical detail indelibly links the world of Stuttgart sports cars with the great Swiss watchmaking tradition.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Dashboard Chronograph
The armour of this chronograph makes a statement with a diameter of 42 mm and a thickness of around 14 mm. Crafted in solid pink gold, the case subtly alternates between fully polished sides and a delicately brushed upper bezel. Beneath the anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the dial features a deep anthracite grey sunray surface. The matt black peripheral flange houses a tachometric scale, essential for calculating speed on the racetrack. The applied pink gold hour-markers and the bright red central second hand provide a dazzling readout of the timekeeping. The transparent caseback reveals the ETA 2894 calibre. This self-winding mechanical movement beats at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and incorporates 37 jewels to limit friction in the chronograph module. It guarantees a power reserve of 42 hours. To secure this timepiece to its wearer's wrist, the watch is fitted with a black natural rubber strap whose inner face reproduces the treads of a high-performance tyre. The whole is secured by a solid pink gold butterfly folding clasp.
Why this Porsche Design watch
On the second-hand market, models in this collection are most often found in titanium or aluminium configurations. This particular variation is particularly rare, as it combines the opulence of solid gold with a resolutely sporty and technical design. The rarity of this precious alloy on this particular model makes it a major emotional investment. It offers an undeniable statutory presence without denying its DNA as a measuring instrument for racing. The balance between the preciousness of the metal and the rawness of the textured rubber creates an aesthetic tension much sought after by discerning collectors who want an atypical timepiece with a true mechanical identity.
Delivered contents and condition
This November 2004 timepiece is accompanied by its original box and official papers attesting to its original provenance. The case shows the signs of chipping typical of case materials from this decade. The watch has been worn and shows diffuse micro-scratches on the gold flanks that bear witness to its history. Careful polishing can be carried out on request to restore the watch to its original factory finish. The integrity of the dial and mechanics remains total.
