The history of this Tudor Black Bay Monochrome
Founded in 1926 by Hans Wilsdorf, who also founded Rolex, Tudor launched its first diving watch in 1954. Launched in 2012, the Black Bay range draws on these design cues without replicating them exactly. The domed dial and crystal, the smooth crown and the proportions of the case are reminiscent of the first generations from the 1950s. The angular hands, nicknamed ‘Snowflake’, first appeared in the brand’s catalogue in 1969 and were fitted to the watches supplied in large numbers to the French Navy in the 1970s. Their square hour hand offers a large luminescent surface, legible at a glance whilst underwater. Fitted with a Manufacture calibre since 2016, the Black Bay enters its third generation in 2023. The Black Bay Monochrome M7941A1A0NU-0002, launched in 2024, features a black dial and bezel, with rhodium-plated hour markers and hands. This black and silver colour scheme gives it its nickname.
Case, movement and strap of this Black Bay Monochrome
The 41 mm stainless steel case alternates between satin-finished and polished surfaces and has a slimmer profile than that of the previous generation. Its notched unidirectional bezel features a black aluminium insert graduated to 60 minutes, with a luminescent triangle and dot at 12 o’clock. The domed sapphire crystal protects a black sunburst dial – also domed – with silver-toned, luminescent applied hour markers. The screw-down crown, adorned with the embossed Tudor rose, ensures water resistance to 200 metres. The solid case back bears the circular ‘Tudor Geneve Calibre Manufacture’ engraving. Inside beats the MT5602-U calibre, a Manufacture self-winding movement with a bidirectional rotor, offering a power reserve of 70 hours. Certified as a chronometer by the COSC and subsequently as a Master Chronometer by METAS, it retains its accuracy after exposure to a magnetic field of 15,000 gauss. The watch is fitted with a black rubber strap with steel end pieces, secured by a tool-free, adjustable T-fit folding clasp, the blade of which bears the Tudor Geneve signature.
Why this Tudor watch
The Black Bay Monochrome is designed for those who want a legible and robust diving watch, without any colour or gold plating. Its black and silver colour scheme makes it easy to wear with a shirt or a weekend outfit. On a rubber strap, it feels lighter on the wrist than with a steel bracelet and can be worn from the swimming pool to the office without any special precautions. METAS certification checks each watch for accuracy, resistance to magnetic fields, water resistance and power reserve. Buying this pre-owned Black Bay means, above all, enjoying a watch purchased in October 2025, still covered by the brand’s 5-year warranty, which is transferable and bears no personalisation.
