The story of this Tibaldi Excelsa 90th Anniversary
Founded in 1916 by Giuseppe Tibaldi, the Italian Maison has crossed the decades while cultivating an architectural approach to the writing instrument. The Excelsa model celebrates the rebirth of the brand under the guidance of the Aquila family and marks the 90th anniversary of the manufacture. The conception of this piece rests on a fascinating mathematical foundation, the Divine Proportion or Golden Ratio. The dimensional relationship between the cap and the visible part of the closed barrel corresponds exactly to the ratio of 1.618. It is to honour this sacred number that worldwide production was strictly limited to 618 pieces. Bearing the reference EXC-EBE-FP/PL-M, this pen embodies an intellectual vision of luxury, where visual harmony stems from a perfect equation.
Architecture, nib and attributes of this Excelsa 90th Anniversary
This oversized instrument asserts itself through stately proportions, with a closed length of around 145 mm and a weight exceeding 50 grams. Its body combines a deep precious black resin named Ebeno with a substantial 925 silver structure. The metal parts, enhanced by platinum plating, feature a sumptuous Clou de Paris guilloché pattern that catches the light with intensity. The securely screwed cap is crowned with a square insert in genuine mother-of-pearl and bears the emblematic tie-shaped clip, spring-mounted and fitted with its signature roller to preserve fabrics. Concealed above the concave section, a smoked window allows the ink level to be checked. The M-size nib is crafted in two-tone 18-carat solid gold. It is finely chiselled with the eagle of the manufacture and rests on a carved ebonite feed guaranteeing a generous flow. Filling is carried out via a patented piston mechanism, whose tactile click and resistance recall the winding of a high watchmaking crown.
Why this Tibaldi pen
This numbered edition bears the number 118 out of 618 and represents a genuine rarity on the pre-owned market. Its appeal lies in its paradoxical balance between the density of its substantial materials and the absolute fluidity of its nib. Enthusiasts particularly seek this generation of two-tone nibs for their incomparable glide, often described as buttery and generous, ideal for broad signatures. Its cool aesthetic, playing on the contrast between the darkness of the resin and the clinical brilliance of platinum, appeals to lovers of confidential and highly technical pieces.
