The story behind this Sinn EZM 3F
Unveiled at Baselworld in 2015, the Sinn EZM 3F is the pilot’s watch version of the EZM 3, the mission-specific diving watch from the Frankfurt-based brand, founded in 1961 by Helmut Sinn. The acronym EZM stands for Einsatzzeitmesser, literally ‘time-measuring instrument for operational use’. It refers to watches designed for professional use. The letter F stands for ‘Flieger’, meaning pilot. The brand retains the 41 mm case and the left-hand crown, which leaves the wrist free and protects the crown from knocks, but replaces the diving bezel with an aviator’s bezel graduated in minutes that counts down. The dial follows the EZM principle, which removes everything that does not directly aid readability. This model bears the reference 703.EZM-3F.M, that of the version on a steel bracelet.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this EZM 3F
The micro-bead-blasted steel case measures 41 mm in diameter and 11.7 mm in thickness, with bevelled lugs and a screw-down caseback. The sapphire crystal is treated with an anti-reflective coating on both sides, and the screw-down crown contributes to a water resistance of 20 bar. The rotating bezel features a descending 60-minute scale and a luminescent triangle at 12 o’clock. The matt black dial features hour markers and hands coated with luminescent material, a black seconds hand with a mark at its tip, and a date window. The case is filled with argon and incorporates a copper sulphate desiccant capsule, visible on the side, which absorbs residual moisture and minimises the build-up of condensation. This is the Ar technology, indicated by the red logo on the dial. The watch is resistant to magnetic fields of up to 80,000 A/m and operates from -45 °C to +80 °C. Inside, the self-winding ETA 2824-2 calibre beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with a power reserve of 38 hours and a seconds-stop function for precise time-setting. The steel bracelet with H-shaped links fastens with a Sinn-branded folding clasp.
Why this Sinn watch
The EZM 3F combines, within a 41 mm case, the technologies that Sinn reserves for its professional instruments: anti-magnetic protection, Ar dehumidification and resistance to temperature fluctuations. Its case is 0.6 mm thinner than that of the EZM 3, and the crown on the left does not dig into the back of the hand. The dial, with no numerals, is easy to read at a glance. This 2016 model retains the ETA 2824-2 calibre from the early years of production – a tried-and-tested movement that any watchmaker knows how to service. Supplied with its warranty card and boxes, it offers a well-documented entry into Sinn’s Einsatzzeitmesser range.
Contents and condition
The watch is supplied as a full set, with its Sinn presentation box, outer box, Sinn warranty card issued in Japan in 2016 and a Sinn screwdriver for the link screws. It is in very good condition, with slight signs of wear from everyday use. The micro-blasted finish on the case remains uniform and the bracelet retains its shape.
