The story behind this Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea
The Geneva-based company has deep technical ties with underwater exploration. The Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea, reference 116660 D-Blue, pays tribute to the 2012 Deepsea Challenge expedition. During this mission, film director James Cameron reached the bottom of the Mariana Trench at a depth of 10,908 metres. The watch’s distinctive dial commemorates this dive. Its colour transitions from a vivid blue to a deep black to illustrate the gradual disappearance of light underwater, whilst the green lettering echoes the hue of the submersible. This timepiece meets the demands of deep-sea professionals whilst also appealing to discerning collectors.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Sea-Dweller Deepsea
The 44 mm case is crafted from Oystersteel and features a case back made from grade 5 titanium alloy to withstand the pressure. The watch is guaranteed water-resistant to 3,900 metres thanks to the Ring Lock system and its helium escape valve. The gradient dial displays the date at 3 o’clock without a magnifying lens, as the 5 mm-thick domed sapphire crystal is designed to distribute underwater forces. The movement is powered by the self-winding Calibre 3135, oscillating at 28,800 vibrations per hour and featuring 31 jewels. This mechanism offers a power reserve of 48 hours. The brushed Oyster bracelet features the Glidelock system, allowing for a fine adjustment of 2 mm in increments for precise fitting.
