The history of this Rolex Milgauss
Rolex designed the Milgauss in the 1950s to meet the requirements of scientists at CERN in Geneva. Exposed to powerful magnetic fields, these professionals found that the accuracy of their watches was being compromised. To address this issue, the manufacturer developed a watch fitted with an internal Faraday cage protecting the movement from magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. This technical innovation gave the model its name. Later reintroduced, the reference 116400GV stands out for its green sapphire crystal. The process of producing this mass-dyed glass proved so complex that Rolex chose not to file a patent, considering the method too difficult to replicate.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this Milgauss
The watch features a 40 mm round case in Oystersteel. Its curved lines and smooth, polished bezel frame a matt black dial. The applied white gold hour markers at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock are finished in orange to match the lightning-shaped seconds hand. The luminous marker at 6 o’clock separates the ‘Swiss’ and ‘Made’ inscriptions. Beneath the solid case back and the anti-magnetic shield lies the self-winding Calibre 3131. This movement offers a power reserve of 48 hours and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The watch is secured by a 3-link Oyster bracelet in steel, featuring alternating brushed and polished surfaces, fitted with an Oysterclasp clasp with a comfort extension.

This piece, dated July 2016, comes with its complete set, including the box, outer box, manuals and warranty card. The watch has recently been polished to watchmaking standards. The steel surfaces, alternating between polished and satin finishes, present a crisp appearance. The original architecture of the case has been preserved. The strap and clasp are in excellent overall condition.
