The history of this Rolex GMT-Master II
The Geneva-based brand has always supported aviation pioneers with the GMT-Master collection, originally designed to equip pilots on transatlantic flights. This two-tone version challenges established aesthetic conventions. The introduction of the crown on the left for this model, reference 126720VTNR, represents a rare departure from the brand’s conservative traditions. Historically produced to special order for a handful of left-handed divers or pilots in years gone by, this unique design is now part of the standard production range. This change required a rethink of the movement’s internal architecture and a modification to the date disc to allow for a display at 9 o’clock. The rigorous certification testing protocol also had to be completely recalibrated to evaluate the watch in its new positions.
Case, calibre and bracelet of this GMT-Master II
Forged from a solid block of Oystersteel, the 40 mm diameter case offers a precise visual balance, alternating between finely polished and brushed finishes. It is topped by a bidirectional rotating bezel fitted with a two-tone green and black ceramic insert. The deep black dial features applied geometric hour-markers in white gold, filled with blue-emitting luminescent material for optimum night-time legibility. An additional green arrow-tipped hand indicates a reference time zone. The whole is protected by a sapphire crystal featuring a magnifying lens above the date. The self-winding mechanical Calibre 3285 movement powers this timepiece, offering a power reserve of 70 hours. This model is fitted with a robust three-link Oyster bracelet, featuring a polished centre link that catches the light. The clasp fastens with a secure folding clasp incorporating a 5 mm adjustable comfort extension.
Why this Rolex watch
This unusual design catches the eye with its bold asymmetry. The reversed design naturally appeals to left-handers, but also to many right-handers seeking a different wearing experience, as the crown no longer rubs against the back of the hand. It is a timepiece that stands out visually from other professional models. Its appeal rests firmly on this unconventional design and its resolutely contemporary look.
