The story behind this Rolex GMT-Master II
In 2013, the House of Rolex unveiled a timepiece that turned the codes of the GMT-Master II collection on their head. At the time, the watch industry considered the creation of a monobloc two-tone ceramic bezel to be technologically impossible. Rolex overturned these predictions by patenting an unprecedented process. The upper part of a Cerachrom disc, initially blue, is impregnated with a specific chemical compound before being fired at a very high temperature. This molecular transmutation freezes the black colour of the night section. The result is reference 116710BLNR, quickly dubbed Batman by collectors. It meets the needs of transcontinental travellers while imposing a clear visual signature.
Case, calibre and strap of this GMT-Master II
The 40 mm case is cut from a block of particularly resistant Oystersteel steel. Its mirror-polished sides contrast with the brushed finish of its massive lugs. The lacquered black dial serves as a backdrop for white gold hour-markers filled with Chromalight luminescent material. A long blue hand running around the dial indicates the 2nd time zone by aligning itself with the rotating bezel. Protected by a sapphire crystal with Cyclops magnifying glass, the watch is water-resistant to 100 metres. Powered by Calibre 3186, this self-winding mechanical movement beats at a frequency of 4 Hz and has a power reserve of 48 hours. It incorporates 31 jewels and a blue Parachrom balance-spring to counter magnetic fields. The timepiece is mounted on a solid 3-link Oyster bracelet with polished central links. It closes with an Oysterlock folding clasp incorporating the Easylink extension system.
