The history of this Rolex Datejust 1600
Launched in 1945 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Geneva-based manufacturer, the Datejust occupies a specific technical niche in contemporary watchmaking. It was the first water-resistant automatic watch to display the date in a window. The Rolex Datejust 1600 follows in this tradition by offering a direct readout of the time. A functional development took place in 1953 with the integration of the Cyclops lens into the crystal. Hans Wilsdorf devised this magnifying lens for ergonomic reasons, to make it easier for his wife – whose eyesight was failing – to read the date. This detail is now a signature feature of the brand.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Datejust
The 36 mm stainless steel case features classic proportions. This version is distinguished by its smooth bezel, which offers a sleek profile. The silver sunray-finished dial subtly catches the light. It is accented by raised baton hour-markers and slender steel hands. The original luminescent material displays a natural patina, authenticated by the ‘T Swiss T’ marking at the bottom of the dial. The watch is secured by a 3-link Oyster bracelet in steel, renowned for its robustness. The watch is powered by the Calibre 1570 self-winding mechanical movement. This chronometer-certified mechanism, fitted with 26 jewels, delivers a power reserve of 48 hours.
Why this Rolex watch
The smooth bezel design gives this model a understated look on the pre-owned market. It has a more restrained aesthetic than the fluted versions whilst retaining the Oyster architecture. The patina of the tritium adds a distinctive character to models from this decade. Acquiring this 1971 edition allows you to add a historic timepiece to your collection, offering a balanced blend of aesthetic appeal and mechanical sophistication.
