The history of this Rolex Cosmograph Daytona
Rolex unveiled the Cosmograph Daytona in the early 1960s to meet the needs of professional motor racing drivers. This watch established itself as a technical measuring instrument thanks to its tachymeter bezel, which allows the average speed to be read. The year 2000 marked a major development with the launch of the stainless steel reference 116520. For the first time, the brand incorporated a chronograph movement developed and assembled entirely in-house. This mechanical transition was accompanied by an aesthetic adjustment to the dial. The small seconds sub-dial moved from its position at 9 o’clock to 6 o’clock. This change introduced a symmetry that defines the visual identity of the modern range.
Case, calibre and strap of this Cosmograph Daytona
This model features a 40 mm round case crafted from steel. Its design incorporates crown guards and a screw-down crown, ensuring water resistance to 100 metres. The fixed metal bezel features an engraved tachymeter scale. The black lacquered dial offers a striking contrast to the white gold hour markers and the three sub-dials highlighted by silver-coloured rings. The luminescent hands ensure readability in the dark. This chronograph is powered by the self-winding Calibre 4130. This movement comprises 201 components and features a vertical clutch system. It provides a power reserve of 72 hours. The watch is fitted with a three-link Oyster bracelet in steel, equipped with an Oysterlock safety clasp. The polished central links contrast with the brushed finish of the outer links.

The watch underwent a full service by the manufacturer in September 2026. It retains its protective service films on the sides and back of the case. The factory polish has restored the metal whilst preserving the thickness and geometry of the original lugs.
