The history of this Rolex Air-King
The Geneva-based company has always maintained very close ties with the world of aviation. Originally launched as a fitting tribute to the pilots of the Royal Air Force, this legendary range reached a major turning point with the launch of the 116900. This model introduced a radically different and strikingly powerful aesthetic that owes absolutely nothing to chance. Its dial draws very direct inspiration from the analogue cockpit instruments designed exclusively by the manufacture to equip the cockpit of the Bloodhound SSC, a supersonic land vehicle intended to shatter the 1,000-mile-per-hour barrier. The large painted minute markers allow for instant reading in an extreme environment subject to vibrations of unprecedented intensity. It is also the very first watch in the range to feature the bold contrast of the logo, combining the iconic green text with the bright yellow crown.
Case, movement and bracelet of this Air-King
Crafted from Oystersteel, the manufacture’s ultra-high-strength aerospace-grade alloy, the case measures 40 mm in diameter and is 13 mm thick. Its perfectly mirror-polished sides contrast with the surgical, uninterrupted brushing of the upper surface of the lugs. The whole is topped by a smooth bezel and a pure sapphire crystal. The movement is the renowned self-winding Calibre 3131, a formidable movement offering a 48-hour power reserve and oscillating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour. This mechanical heart is protected from intense magnetic fields by an internal shield made of a ferromagnetic alloy. The deep black dial features 18-carat white gold Arabic numerals at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions and a second hand in a magnetic electric green. The watch is securely mounted on a solid three-link Oyster bracelet, fastened by a folding clasp featuring a 5 mm comfort extension. It is water-resistant to 100 metres.
