The geometric brilliance of these yellow gold earrings
The term ‘princess cut’ had been in use in London since the 1960s, but its modern version – a faceted square in the shape of an inverted pyramid – was created in 1980 by the gem cutters Betzalel Ambar, Ygal Perlman and Israel Itzkowitz. These yellow gold earrings feature this geometric design with 22 princess-cut diamonds – 11 per earring – with an estimated total weight of 0.75 carats. Set in 18-carat yellow gold (750 fineness), they take the form of half-hoop earrings. This unsigned second-hand piece derives its character from a criss-cross design, where the row of stones and a band of polished gold overlap diagonally.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Each hoop comprises two bands. The first band holds the 11 diamonds in a rail setting, aligned edge to edge between two polished gold fillets that hold them from the sides, with no visible prongs. The princess cut lends itself well to this setting, as its right angles allow the stones to touch without any gaps between them. The second band, domed and carved with two parallel grooves, runs diagonally over the row, creating the criss-cross pattern that defines the design. The gold is mirror-polished on all sides. At the back, a straight stem and a hinged omega clip secure the clasp to the earlobe, ensuring a secure fit. Viewed from the front, the row of squares reflects light in sharp flashes, from one stone to the next, with the slightest movement of the head.
Why choose these second-hand earrings
A princess-cut rail setting requires precise calibration of the stones and meticulous adjustment of the rail – workshop craftsmanship that accounts for a significant portion of the price of a new piece. In the second-hand market, this craftsmanship remains intact, and 0.75 carats of diamonds are set in a solid gold frame, with a more structured design than a plain hoop. Their understated size makes them suitable for everyday wear, from the office to dinner, without needing any other jewellery alongside them.
