The gold thread of the Mattioli Tibet Maxi ring
In Himalayan families, a mother would give her daughter a thread wound into a ring, with each coil symbolising a wish for a year of happiness. The Turin-based jewellery house Mattioli has revived this tradition for its Tibet collection, in which each ring is crafted from a single strand of hand-woven gold. This Mattioli Tibet Maxi ring, reference MAN75002, is the widest version in the collection, crafted from mirror-polished 18-carat rose gold, without any gemstones. It has now joined our selection of pre-owned jewellery, with its signature and workshop craftsmanship intact.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The round-section wire is wound in tight coils that cross diagonally and overlap in no apparent order, forming a band 14 mm wide. On the top, the crossings form a dense weave, whilst the sides reveal gaps between the wires. All surfaces are mirror-polished, both on the outside and inside of the ring, where a smooth flat surface bears the engraved signature. The design remains airy because the gold is never solid, only coiled. When worn, the band covers the knuckle and each crossing catches the light with the slightest movement of the hand.
Why choose this second-hand ring
The Tibet Maxi is still hand-woven in the Maison’s workshops, and each piece requires painstaking work with the gold wire. Choosing it second-hand gives you access to the most generous version in the collection – the one whose width makes it truly stand out – with a polish that has already been restored by our master jeweller. Among Mattioli’s jewellery, this is a design without stones or enamel, which can be worn on its own or alongside delicate rings without ever being overshadowed. The deep rose hue of this 18-carat gold complements both fair and tanned complexions.
Contents and condition
On the inside of the band, the ring bears the 750 hallmark for 18-carat gold, the MATTIOLI signature and the Italian master’s mark featuring a star, followed by the ‘TO’ code for the province of Turin. It is size 50, its original size. Our artisan jeweller has polished and inspected it, and the rose gold has regained an even mirror finish across the entire surface, right down to the intersections. It is supplied in a The Swiss Collector box.
