The history of this Audemars Piguet Royal Oak
With the Royal Oak range, the Le Brassus-based manufacture offers a technical approach to watchmaking. To mark the model’s 50th anniversary, the brand is presenting a subtle evolution. The reference 15550ST.OO.1356ST.06 exemplifies this transition. On this iteration, Audemars Piguet has removed its applied monogram, replacing it with a full signature achieved through galvanic deposition – a process akin to 3D printing in gold. The ‘Bleu nuit nuage 50’ shade, which was historically unstable during the initial electroplating baths, is now fixed using a PVD treatment. This timepiece carries on the legacy of a structured design whilst benefiting from the brand’s contemporary advancements.
Case, movement and strap of this Royal Oak
The stainless steel case measures 37 mm in diameter and is 9.1 mm thick. The octagonal bezel, topped with eight screws, frames a dial adorned with the Grande Tapisserie pattern. The applied hour markers and hands feature a luminescent coating to facilitate reading in the dark. The sapphire crystal caseback reveals the calibre 5900, a self-winding mechanical movement comprising 188 components. This movement operates at a frequency of 4 Hz and offers a power reserve of 60 hours. The integrated steel bracelet, characterised by alternating brushed surfaces and polished edges, fastens with a folding clasp.
Why this Audemars Piguet watch
The 37 mm diameter offers balanced proportions that suit a variety of wrists whilst retaining the watch’s striking geometric design. On the pre-owned market, this configuration allows you to acquire the contemporary evolution of the range, featuring its new movement and minimalist dial. The contrast between the finely finished steel and the deep blue dial gives structure to a understated and easy-to-read timepiece.
