The spiral design of a marquise-cut ruby ring
The marquise ring first appeared at the French court in the 18th century, featuring an elongated setting that covers the knuckle and adorns the hand without weighing it down. This ruby marquise ring echoes that silhouette in a more graphic, vintage style, with two offset oval plates that wind around the stone like a spiral. At the centre, an oval cabochon ruby of approximately 0.70 carats displays a deep raspberry red, which the rounded polish of the cut renders dense and luminous. The 18-carat gold features two colours: grey for the setting, and yellow for the band. This pre-owned, unsigned piece bears the 750 hallmark and a master’s mark.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
The ruby is set in a closed setting, with a polished white gold collar that envelops the cabochon and protects its rounded shape. Surrounding it, 22 brilliant-cut diamonds, totalling approximately 0.47 carats, are set in a grain setting across two tiers. The first tier forms a complete circle around the ruby, whilst the second extends in two arcs that follow the contour of the setting and accentuate the rotational effect. A narrow band of yellow gold borders each tier. Beneath the setting, the ring shank opens in a V-shape and joins polished shoulders, a design that lightens the line when viewed in profile. On the finger, the setting sits in line with the hand and elongates its silhouette.
Why choose this second-hand ring
A two-tiered grain-set mount, crafted from two types of gold, requires many hours of workshop labour today – a level of craftsmanship that second-hand pieces make accessible. The cabochon, the oldest cut for coloured gemstones, is becoming increasingly rare in contemporary jewellery, which favours faceted rubies. The spiral design and the contrast between the two shades of gold characterise a vintage ring with a distinctive character, rarely found in today’s shop windows.
