The story behind this Dennison ALD
Dennison has a rich industrial heritage dating back to 1874. Founded by Aaron Lufkin Dennison, the company made a name for itself by designing cases for numerous watch manufacturers during the last century. The ALD model pays homage to this heritage by drawing on the geometry of the cushion-shaped watches that were so popular during the 1920s. This contemporary creation revives the brand’s signature visual style whilst adopting a minimalist approach to the dial. The initials of its historic founder adorn the case back to mark this continuity between the past and the present.
Case, movement and strap of this ALD
The polished stainless steel case measures 37 mm in diameter. Its cushion shape softens the geometric lines and offers a balanced presence on the wrist. The smooth bezel frames a sapphire crystal protecting a midnight blue aventurine glass dial. This mineral surface features copper-coloured micro-inclusions that catch the light. The decision to omit hour markers and numerals allows the material to express itself fully. Two rhodium-plated metal hands sweep across the dial: an asymmetrical spear-shaped hand for the hours and a tapered hand for the minutes. The solid, screw-down case back houses a Swiss Ronda 1062 calibre quartz movement, ensuring reliable accuracy for everyday wear. The watch comes with a midnight blue leather strap fitted with a classic pin buckle.
Why this Dennison watch
This design stands out for its minimalist approach. The contrast between the shine of the steel and the mineral dial gives it a distinct visual identity. On the second-hand market, this piece represents an opportunity to acquire a timepiece with a unique design. Its dial makes it suitable for both formal and more casual outfits. This piece embodies a thoughtful approach to independent watchmaking.
