The diamond-patterned latticework on this Cartier ring
Founded in Paris in 1847 by Louis-François Cartier, the House moved to 13 Rue de la Paix in 1899. This vintage Cartier ring in 18-carat yellow gold features two classic jewellery motifs: the trellis and the godron. Its dome is divided into diamond-shaped cells, each set with a brilliant-cut diamond, totalling 13 diamonds with an estimated total weight of 0.19 carats. On either side, three transverse godrons – these rounded mouldings borrowed from goldsmithing – frame the motif and mark the transition to the smooth band. Signed and numbered, it is now available on the pre-owned jewellery market.
Architecture and jewellery craftsmanship
Each diamond rests in a square setting turned on its point, held in place by four grains at the corners, leaving the stone’s table largely exposed. The polished edges between the recesses intersect diagonally, forming a raised lattice pattern across the entire width of the dome. The stones are arranged in a staggered pattern, so that each offset row extends the previous one towards the sides. The three godrons on each shoulder are separated by sharp grooves, and the band tapers towards the back into a smooth, mirror-polished strip. On the hand, the 13 diamonds distributed across the dome reflect the light in a succession of small flashes.
Why choose this second-hand ring
Amongst Cartier’s vintage jewellery, this ring catches the eye with a setting that covers the entire surface of the dome. The grain-set arrangement of 13 diamonds, each in its own setting, represents a significant amount of workshop time, which is reflected in the price of a new creation. The dome and its fluting give the ring a distinct presence on the finger without the need for a centre stone. Choosing this vintage Cartier ring means wearing the signature of the Rue de la Paix, with a design built entirely around the setting.
